Size:

18" x 25"
(46 x 61 cm)

Circa:
1880
Cat. #:
392
Description:

This appears to be genuine utilitarian artifact.

There is simplicity of composition one would anticipate in such a weaving.

Yet, the compositional elements are identified with Shahsavan weaving of the period and locale.

The field display has five primary horizontal panels.

Three contain star forms with radiating extensions or arms.

The remaining panels have a design consisting exclusively of reciprocal motifs.

There is a surprisingly extensive range of color, all from natural dye sources.

There are, for example, three distinct shades of blue and a nuanced brown containing a hint of red.

Condition:

Not unexpectedly there is evidence of wear. Although the piece has been professionally cleaned remnants of 'trail dust' remain. Further cleaning is not recommended.

Structure:

Weft-Face Plain Weave
