Title:
Shahsavan Chanteh
Khamseh Region
Northwest Persia
Size:

15" x 13" (+/-)

Circa:
1880
Cat. #:
403
Description:

A chanteh is a small bag typically used to carry personal items.

This little piece appears to have been the efforts of a determined but seemingly inexperienced young weaver.

As sometime happens the unintended result is a rather unique piece of woven folk art.

The execution of the field motifs is, shall we say, free-flowing.

Look closely and one sees that the interior elements of each diamond motif are slightly different than another.

The very light brown (wool) color eventually gives way to white or ivory cotton.

The original weft-faced plain weave back has survived in good condition.

The colors are outstanding; clear with good range and derived from natural dye sources.

Condition:

The field and border areas are in excellent condition. The condition of the side and end wrap is fair. Small portions of the original wrap have survived.
